Did anyone catch that incredible 5 man playoff in the Bellsouth Classic last night?
That was crazy. I know Arjun Atwal and Brandt Jobe knocked it in the water on the first playoff hole and were eliminated. Then it was left to Phil Mickelson, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Rich Beem. Rich was a surprising member of the playoff I wasn’t expecting as he hasn’t been very hot over the last year, but he gave Phil a good run for his money.
Jose Maria actually had a chance to win it outright during regulation play on the 18th hole but missed a 5 footer. Then during the 1st playoff hole, after both Phil and Rich missed their birdie tries, he was faced with another 5 footer to win. He missed it again. I believe alot of the wind in his sails when bye bye after that.
So on the 2nd playoff hole, no birdies could be converted and all 3 walked away with pars.
On the 3rd playoff hole, Jose found the right fescue (heather) and hit a good shot into the fairway. After Phil and Rich were on the green in 2, Jose had a chance to knock it close. He hit a good shot into the green but had it spin too much and went back into the water.
He proceeded to drop another and hit it again the water. He was done.
Phil and Rich headed to 17 for the 4th playoff hole. Rich found himself in the fairway bunker while Phil was down the middle. Rich knocked it to the right of the green and Phil stuck it about 10 feet.
After Rich knocked his chip close, it came down to Phil needing to make a putt. Phil has been in these situations before and of course, he made it.
So Phil Mickelson won the 2005 Bell South Classic.
Good job Phil. Good luck in the Masters this year.

Erik has corrected me, it is a 5 man playoff. Apparently, I suck at math
