The Presidents Cup, to be played September 26-30, has just had the Captains Picks (Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player) made public. Currently, the United States has a 4-1-1 record over the International Team. 11 of the 12 players on the International squad are ranked in the top 27 in the world. Nicklaus went with a pair of Rookies using Hunter Mahan (recently won the Travelers Championship) and Lucas Glover. Gary Player, however, went with a pair that has winning experience. Mike Weir and Nick O’Hern were Player’s picks, and Mike Weir certainly has the winning experience with his greatest victory at the 2003 Masters.

Hunter Mahan

Hunter MahanA side story about Hunter Mahan. When I was in high school, I was involved in the FCWT Junior Tour which gave me opportunities to play various courses around the country. One of the tournaments took place on Kiawah Island at the Ocean Course. On my flight down for a practice round, I happened to be on the same plane with a young Hunter Mahan who was ranked #1 in the country as a junior player. I got a chance to briefly speak with him, real nice guy. He went on to win the tournament I think with a pair of 71’s. One funny fact of Hunter that I remember is he didn’t wear golf shoes, but what looked to be regular tennis shoes.

I look forward to seeing Hunter and the other players play AND WIN the next months Presidents Cup.
