Anyone who paid any attention to the President’s Cup before Sunday’s singles matches knew the U.S. had a huge chance of winning with a solid 7 point lead. They only needed 3 points to win the Cup and did so with roughly 4-5 matches still on the course. One of the biggest upsets of the day came between Tiger Woods and Mike Weir. Tiger was the obvious choice for victory, but Wier (who was playing in his home country) had a legion of spectators rooting him on with every lefty swing.

Tiger played uncharacteristically poor in my opinion by missing tons of opportunities and hitting some poor shots in the process, including a chance to go one up on 18, except he hit his drive in the water. He made a late back nine charge with back to back birdies and some pars that vaulted him from 3 down to 1 up, but Wier made a clutch birdie on 17 that brought the match even. Tiger’s drive on 18, however, sealed his fate. So much for Tiger dominating his match, eh?
