Tiger is done for the year…TV networks weep

I just heard the gut wrenching news that Tiger Woods will undergo another surgery and will be out for the rest of the year. Ugh.  So this will affect many people, but obviously this is in Tiger’s best interest…not just for the present, but the future as he chases Jack Nicklaus’s famouse 18 Major Championships.

Of course, with Tiger missing in action, this means several things:

  • Tournament attendance “will” be lower in the tournaments this year
  • TV Networks will experience a drop in television viewers who typically come out of the woodwork in order to watch Tiger pounce on his opponents. This also means less money for the TV Networks to profit on.
  • I do not know if Tiger’s withdrawal of the season will affect 2008 prize purses. I doubt it.

Hopefully Tiger’s recovery will produce a stronger player in himself come 2009…however it is difficult to compete with the plenty of victories he has had on an ailing knee that we have seen in 2007 and 2008 thus far. Will he actually “play” better in 2009? Who knows.

So for me, a huge Tiger fan, the 2008 golf season went from exciting to “blah” within a day. Bummer.

Good luck Tiger, we hope you heal well.

I actually think that TV ratings etc will increase.

Without Tiger anybody can win, which means it will be far more interesting to watch. I, for one, am looking forward to not having to sit through 5 minutes of replays and reverse angles of each and every shot Tiger plays. (Mostly true for US broadcasts of golf)
