The Open Championship
Runner-up: Bobby Locke
Sam Snead won The Open Championship at St Andrews in his first and only Open appearance. Snead had never seen a links course before but adapted brilliantly. He won by four strokes over Bobby Locke and Johnny Bulla. Snead famously remarked he thought the Old Course looked like an old, beat-up golf course when he first saw it.
