Peter Thomson won his first Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Thomson was 24 years old and would become one of the greatest links golfers ever. He beat Syd Scott, Dai Rees, and Bobby Locke in a four-way tie for second. Thomson began a remarkable run of five Opens in twelve years.
