Bob Charles of New Zealand became the first left-handed player to win a major championship, defeating Phil Rodgers of the USA in a 36-hole playoff. Charles won 140-148. Charles was renowned for having one of the finest putting strokes in the game. He remains the only left-handed Open champion.
