Jack Nicklaus won his first Open Championship at Muirfield, completing the career Grand Slam at age 26. Nicklaus played conservatively, deliberately laying up off several tees to avoid the rough. He beat Doug Sanders and Dave Thomas by one stroke. Nicklaus would return to win at Muirfield again in 1972.
