The Open Championship
Runner-up: Payne Stewart
Sandy Lyle became the first Scottish winner of The Open since 1920. Lyle beat Payne Stewart and Bernhard Langer on a difficult course. Lyle's powerful but elegant game was well-suited to links conditions. He would go on to win the US Masters in 1988.
