The Open Championship
Runner-up: Justin Leonard
Paul Lawrie won from ten strokes behind entering the final round, the largest final-round deficit overcome in a major. Lawrie won a four-hole aggregate playoff over Justin Leonard and Jean Van de Velde. Van de Velde had led by three with one hole to play but hit his tee shot into the rough, then into the Barry Burn, and made triple bogey to fall into the playoff. One of the most extraordinary collapses in major history. Lawrie shot a final round 67.
