Ben Curtis, ranked 396th in the world and playing in his first Open Championship, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in major history. Curtis beat Thomas Bjorn and Vijay Singh by a stroke. Bjorn had led by three with three to play but took three shots to get out of a bunker on the 16th hole. Curtis had missed the cut in his only previous major.
