Darren Clarke won his first major at age 42 at Royal St George's. Clarke, from Northern Ireland, played with the support of the partisan crowd and produced a controlled, powerful performance. He beat Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson by three strokes. Clarke had suffered the loss of his wife Heather to cancer in 2006 and this win was deeply emotional.
