Ernie Els won his second Open Championship in unexpected fashion. Adam Scott had led by four strokes with four holes to play but bogeyed each of the last four holes. Els, already in the clubhouse, was awarded the Claret Jug. Scott's collapse was one of the most painful in major history. Els was the most surprised man on the course.
