Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur who had grown up across the street from The Country Club, defeated British legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff. The victory is considered the most important moment in American golf history and helped popularize the sport in America. Ouimet was accompanied by his 10-year-old caddie Eddie Lowery.
