Lloyd Mangrum won his only major in a three-way playoff against Byron Nelson and Vic Ghezzi. Mangrum shot 72-73 in the playoff rounds. The championship resumed after a four-year wartime hiatus. Mangrum was a World War II veteran who had been wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.
