Tony Jacklin became the first Englishman to win the US Open since Ted Ray in 1920. He led wire-to-wire and won by seven strokes, a dominant performance. Dave Hill finished runner-up but caused controversy by calling Hazeltine 'a cow pasture with a lake.' Jacklin had won The Open Championship just the previous year.
