Lee Trevino defeated Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff, 68-71. Before the playoff round, Trevino memorably threw a rubber snake at Nicklaus on the first tee to break the tension. Trevino won two weeks later at the Canadian Open and then the Open Championship, winning three national opens in three weeks.
