U.S. Open
Runner-up: Phil Mickelson
Payne Stewart holed a 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole to defeat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart famously pointed to Mickelson and acknowledged that he would be a father for the first time soon after the tournament. Stewart died four months later in a plane crash. His win is remembered as one of the most emotional in US Open history.
