Walter Burkemo won the PGA Championship at his home club area, defeating Felice Torza 2&1 in the 36-hole final. Burkemo had been runner-up in 1951 and his championship win was a redemptive victory. Ben Hogan, who had won three other majors that year, could not defend his PGA match play form.
