Lionel Hebert won the final match play PGA Championship, defeating Dow Finsterwald 2&1 in the 36-hole final. The following year the tournament would switch to 72-hole stroke play. Hebert's victory was the last of the great match play era and he remained the answer to a trivia question as the last match play PGA champion.
