Don January won the PGA Championship in an 18-hole playoff over Don Massengale. January had finished regulation tied with Massengale and outplayed him in the playoff. The win came six years after January had been involved in the famous 1961 playoff with Jerry Barber. January was a superb ball-striker who would later become a legend on the Senior Tour.
